ZEHR, SISTER MARIA GORETTI, CCVI, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2001, at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital after receiving the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.

Her loving sisters, students, former students and faculty members from the University of the Incarnate Word where she served as Professor of music surrounded her in prayer.

A native of St. Louis, Sister Goretti joined the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1949 and took her first vows in 1952. She is survived by the members of her Congregation who will deeply miss her joyful, fun-loving spirit, as well as her gift of music. Her students and former students who held her in highest esteem and her fellow faculty members at UIW will also sorely miss her.

Sister held a Bachelor of Music Degree from Incarnate Word College, a Master of Music from the University of Texas at Austin and Doctorate in Music from Indiana University. Sister began teaching at UIW (then Incarnate Word College) in 1957 and spent her career there. She also gave private piano and organ classes and performed as a concert organist at churches all over San Antonio and the United States.

Sister was preceded in death by her mother, Priscilla Flo Mesing Zehr and her father, Nicholas Joseph Zehr, a native of Seine, Austria. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Donald Joseph Zehr, who died as an infant and Eugene J. Zehr and his first wife, Elizabeth Ann Roer Zehr, who was the mother of Sister's many nieces and nephews; her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Bernard Bono, of St. Louis, Missiouri and Mary Lynn Zehr, widow of Eugene J. Zehr, survive Sister; also surviving Sister are several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, including Billy Bono of St. Louis, Robert Joseph and Patricia Eiliene Zehr of Naples, Florida, Catherine Ann Zehr and Arthur Marc Unterman, their daughter Elizabeth Martha of New York City, Mark Thomas Zehr of Boston, Massachusetts, Barbara Ann Zehr and Laurene Andrew Dobrot, their children Thomas Andrew and Marisa Ann of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Glenn Stephen and Sarah Meininger Zehr, their children Christina Gabriella and Nicholas Eugene of St. Louis, Missouri.

Sister's wake will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Chapel of the Incarnate Word. A musical prelude will precede the wake, beginning at 6:00. A musical preclude beginning at 3:30 p.m. will precede the liturgy of Resurrection, which will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Monday, also at the Chapel of the Incarnate Word, with burial in the Sisters' Cemetery on UIW campus. Her family has asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Sister Maria Goretti Zehr Scholarship in Music. A music scholarship in her name was established by alumnus Paul Rosetti in January 2001 and additional contributions may be made to that endowment.
