Frederick William King passed away at his home Friday, October 19. He was born May 30, 1914 to Morgan Louis and Inis Elizabeth Stotts King, in Joplin, Missouri.

He grew up in Carthage, Missouri and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1936 with a degree in Economics. Upon graduating, he took a job with Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation in Chicago as an Executive Assistant. He attended the Naval Program at Dartmouth College for Naval Air Transport Service (N.A.T.S.) entering as a ground officer with the rank of Lieutenant J.G. (Junior Grade). Serving his country in World War II, he spent 3 ½ years in N.A.T.S., over 2 years of it in the Western Pacific. After the war he went to work for Trans World Airlines (TWA) in Chicago where he met and married his wife Mary Jean Ellspermann on February 26, 1949 at the Graham Taylor Chapel of The University of Chicago. He then joined his father, working for the M. L. King Wholesale Lumber Company in Joplin and eventually took over the business upon his father's death. He kept the business going until the mid-1990's. He obtained his real-estate license and was a realtor for Charles Burt Realty, and later for Brookman Realty, finally "giving in" to retirement about the same time he closed the lumber business.

Because he had led such an interesting life, his daughter, Susan urged him to put it down on paper, which led him to actually publish a book of his memoirs in "A Western Odyssey- An Autobiography and More" in 2002. Fred was active in his younger life, and a member of many clubs. He was an active member of the South Joplin Christian Church serving as a Deacon, Elder, and Elder Emeritus, a member of the Joplin Kiwanis Club, The North American Wholesale Lumber Association, the Joplin Ski Club, and Twin Hills Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed tennis, snow skiing, and family car trips across the United States and parts of Canada. He successfully led the opposition against fluoride in 1960 and 1989, serving as President of the Joplin Pure Water Association for more than 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his sister Arlene King Covey.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean, of the home; three daughters Janet King Johnson and husband Andy of Madison, Wisconsin; Nanci King Roberts and husband Randy of Dallas, Texas; Susan Kathleen King Powers and husband Mark of Joplin; his son, Frederick ‘Lee' King and wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Lane of Arkadelphia, Arkansas; Grandchildren- Lang Christoffer King Johnson and wife Tonya, Drew Steffan King Johnson, Erin Elizabeth King, Austin Morgan King, Michelle Lauren Roberts, Kevin Randall Roberts; Great-granddaughter Ella Soren Johnson; his nephew King Covey and wife Kris; First Cousins David Pelsue and wife Irene, and Carolyn Pelsue Fellows.

The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Monday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
