Zachariah Johnston McChesney was the son of Robert McChesney and Elizabeth Johnston. He was married twice, to Nancy A. Bell on 23 Apr 1822 (by Rev. Conrad Speece, Familysearch Film # 007578826, Augusta Co., VA Marriage Records, original old record) and to Amanda M. Cochran, before 1860.

McChesney children with Nancy:
William Johnston Bell, Aug 1823, below
Zachariah Johnston, 5 Oct 1842, below

McChesney children with Amanda:
Zachariah, abt 1850
Adam, abt 1857 - died 1885*

His father died 12 Feb 1842 and willed to him: son ZACHARIAH (plantation in Rockbridge Co. on the Greenville Rd., about 5 miles from Lexington, purchased of Wm Taylor with 530 acres, also the shares of Joseph & Benjamin, that James sold, horses, stock, farming utensils on plantation in Augusta Co., $50.). Then 6 years and 9 months later, his mom died on 14 Nov 1848.

On the 1850 Dist. 2 1/2, Augusta Co., Virginia census, I found farmer Zachariah J McChesney, 32 and William B McChesney, 27, both Virginia born.

On the 1860 District 1, Augusta Co., Virginia census, I found Zechariah McChesney, 63; Amanda M McChesney, 39; Zechanah McChesney, 10 and B F Cochran, 18.

On the 1870 South River, Augusta Co., Virginia census, I found farmer Zach McChesney, 73, with $67K in real estate; Amanda M McChesney, 49; Adam McChesney, 9; Zachariah McChesney, 20, with $20K in personal property; house keeper Mary Smith, 29 and Annie Irene Smith, 3, all Virginia born, except for Amanda in SC.

Suspect this went to his family: "Zach McChesney received $2,500 for condemnations." He was on a long list of neighbors for "Land Damage in Augusta Co., on the S.V.R.R. The following is a list of the land damages paid in passing through Augusta county by the Shenandoah Valley Railroad; also the amount paid for land which was condemned for its uses." Published in the Staunton Vindicator (VA) dated 14 Jul 1882, p 3.

Zachariah inherited his father's home. In 1849, he sold it to John A Gibson, Deed book CC413. A 1936 photo of home is at the Lib. of VA, in the WPA Old Historical Homes survey, by Jas W. McClung. It was called Spring Hill.

Also at the Library of Virginia has a manuscript call #39243, called Springhill, Augusta Co., Virginia: The Zach McChesney Home, by P H Trout, Richmond, Virginia, 1938, 11 pages.

The Library of Virginia, Guide to the McChesney family papers, 1835-1920, Accession # 11330, Special Collections Department, Charlottesville, Va at UVA, has a "collection of 104 items, 1835-1920, pertains chiefly to the McChesney family of Augusta Co., Virginia. There are personal correspondence, business and legal correspondence, and business papers of Zachariah J. McChesney and his sons Adam McChesney and Wm J. B. McChesney."

5 Feb 1878 Staunton Spectator lists Z. McChesney and wife to Z.J. McChesney, 23 acres, 1r and 6p, value $1.00.

There are several Chancery cases in his name in Augusta Co., Virginia, available at the Library of VA online.

A lovely sketch of the "Residence of Adam McChesney of South River District, Augusta Co., Virginia" is in the Historical Atlas of Augusta Co., Virginia, by Jed Hotchkiss, 1885, p 69.

"Mr. Zachariah McChesney, a venerable citizen of the county and one of the largest land holders in it, died at his residence on South River Friday, in the 83d year of his age. He had followed the pursuit of agriculture all his life and was a quiet, respected, model farmer, neighbor and business man. To his son, Mr. Adam McChesney, he bequeathed the home farm of 1,400 acres and a tract in Pocahontas, and to his grandson, Zach. McChesney, he bequeathed a farm of 500 acres, another farm on South River below Waynesboro and a tract of land in Highland county. The funeral took place at Tinkling Spring church on Saturday, and the pall bearers were Messrs. Benj. Ellis, M. R. Coalter, Clinton Hall, Brown Patterson and Wm. Hunter." Published in the Staunton Vindicator, Vol 34, #36, 5 Sept 1879 (see photo).

"DEATHS.-On last Friday, at his residence on South river, in this county, Mr. Zachariah McChesney departed this life. He was one among the oldest men in tho county, as well as one of the wealthiest. His farm is one of the finest in Augusta county. He leaves, we believe, but few near relatives, a son and grandson. Mr. McChesney was in his 83rd year. He was one of the sturdy, straight-forward, accummulating farmers, who have done so much to open up this fertile valley and at the same time make for themselves large fortunes. Though a close business man, he was of a generous disposition and kind-hearted. His burial at Tinkling Spring Church on Saturday, was attended by a large number of persons. The pall-bearers were Wm. Hunter, Clinton Hall, M. R. Coal ter, Benj. Ellis, Brown Patterson."Published in the Staunton Spectator, Vol 56, #50, dated 2 Sept 1879 (see photo).

"Will of Zachariah J. McChesney admitted to probate, with G. M. Harrison as executor. This estate is estimated to be i worth $75,000, and the executor was required - to pay the State tax of $75." Published in the Valley Virginian, Vol 14, #24, dated 25 Sept 1879, p 3.

His wives, Nancy and Amanda plus a young son, were also buried here.
