Walter Douglas GRAHAM (1859-1914) and Elizabeth GRAHAM (nee HUMPHREYS) (c. 1868 – 1914)

WDG (b. 27 Feb 1859 Porchester Sq. Paddington, Middx.) son of Walter GRAHAM and Susan Scovell GRAHAM (nee ADAMS) Oldest of ten children (7 surviving 1911). WDG’s father (Walter GRAHAM) was a seed crusher* with mills at West Drayton. WDG followed his father in to the same business. In 1884 (age 25) he left England for Bombay, India.

Oils, oil seed cake and animal feeds from crushing oil seed.

GRAHAM Walter Douglas (Hong Kong) Commission agent, branch manager Wilkinson, Heywood and Clark Ltd. B. Feb 27 1853.* Went to Bombay in 1884, and after residing there for 10 years representing W, H & C. came to Hong Kong to look after their interests in the Far East; also does business on own account as Douglas GRAHAM. Clubs: Hongkong; Shanghai; Royal Bombay Yacht; United Empire, London. Address: Alexandra Buildings, Hongkong[1]

Married Elizabeth HUMPHREYS in Yokohama Japan 8 October 1896.

WDG’s father died in 1910 and his mother in November 1914. Walter Douglas and Elizabeth were returning to London from Hong Kong to Walter Douglas’ sick mother. They were travelling First Class on the Empress of Ireland. They drowned on 29th May 1914 and their bodies were brought back to London and buried on 20th June 1914.

The funeral of Mr and Mrs Walter Douglas Graham, lost in the Empress of Ireland sinking, took place on Saturday 20th June 1914. Service at St. Mary's, Acton followed by burial at Paddington Cemetery, Willesden Lane.

Although the grave still exists the hugely elaborate memorial stone has been demolished. I have not been able to locate a photograph of the memorial or find a record of the wording.[2]
