British Record Producer, Sound Engineer. He started his career in the 1960s as an engineer with Jeff Beck, Fleetwood Mac and Deep Purple. He produced and engineered 11 albums for Deep Purple and went on to produce all three studio albums by Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow with lead singer Ronnie James Dio. The Rainbow albums include: "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" (1975), "Rising" (1976) & "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" (1978). Ronnie James Dio became the lead singer for Black Sabbath and Birch then produced two Black Sabbath albums, "Heaven and Hell" (1980) & "Mob Rules" (1981). He was known for engineering and producing albums recorded predominantly by other British rock bands. On Fleetwood Mac's album "Mystery to Me" (1973), he is also credited for playing acoustic guitar. The song "Hard Lovin' Man" from the Deep Purple album Deep Purple in Rock (1970) is dedicated to him: "For Martin Birch, catalyst." He began working exclusively for Iron Maiden in 1981 on the album, "Killers" (1981) and retired in 1992, after producing their "Fear of the Dark" album, the last of the 10 records he produced with the group. He appeared in Iron Maiden's music video "Holy Smoke" two years before his retirement.
