Raymond G. Begel was the son of William C. and Merta (Hemingway) Begel of Clinton County, Michigan.

On 14 April, 1909, Ray was first married to Loretta Belle (La Rita / Lorita) Downham and together they had three daughters. Research is currently underway to determine their vital notations and marriages, and this memorial will be updated to reflect the results.

His second marriage was in about 1928 to my grandmother, Nellie Anne Page, which was her third marriage with previous marriages to George Munson (also interred in Riverside Cemetery, Elsie) and then to Vernon Burr Sheldon (1890 - 1927). After my grandfather Vernon died from a sudden illness while the Grand Trunk railroad he was working on passed through Valparaiso, Indiana, Nellie later married Raymond who became my father's step-dad.

Raymond is indirectly and partially the reason our family lives in Arizona! He came down with TB and he and Nellie moved to Tucson, Arizona for his health. However, Ray eventually died from one of the first documented cases of Multiple Melinoma at St. Mary's Hospital, Tucson. His remains were returned to Michigan for burial.

Returning to Michigan, Nellie was followed by her landlord, James Augustus Nolan (1886 - 1963), and they wed in Bannister, Gratiot County, Michigan and returned to live in Tucson. My parents moved our family to Mesa in 1971 in part to care for her in her later years. Nellie passed away in Mesa, Arizona in 1973 after experiencing two strokes.

While Ray and Nellie share a headstone in Riverside Cemetery, there is no date of death for Nellie (Page) Begel. She is actually interred in the Mesa City Cemetery, Arizona, as Nellie Page Sheldon Nolan.

Photos and more details of Ray's life are to come.
