Berry Gordy I was the son of James T Gordy, a white plantation owner, and Esther Johnson, an enslaved woman he owned. Esther was only 14 years old when Berry was born. Berry married Lucy Hellum and had nine children, including Berry Gordy II. Through his son Berry, he is the grandfather of Berry Gordy III or Berry Gordy Jr, the founder of Motown Records.

Berry is also the half-brother of James J Gordy. Who, through is daughter Lily, is the grandfather of President Jimmy Carter.
