Doctor who tended to the needs of President (general) Ullyses S. Grant. He was a devoted physician, and remained faithful until Grant's death.

#449 JONATHAN HANCOCK DOUGLAS, A.M., M..D., [son of Jonathan], born in Waterford, NY, June 5, 1824; graduated from Williams College, in 1843; received his master's degree in course in 1846; studied medicine in the office of his brother-in-law, Dr. Horace GREEN; attended two courses of lectures in the University of Pennsylvania, and received the degree of Doctor of Medicine from that institution in 1847; passed two years and a half in Europe, from 1849 to 1851, in attendance upon lectures and hospitals in Paris; returned to the United States in the fall of 1851; practiced medicine in New Orleans, La., two years, then finally, in 1854, established himself in New York city, which is his present (‘78) place of residence. In 1857 he became editor and proprietor of the "American Medical Monthly", and conducted it for six years, until 1862. In July, 1861, he entered the service of the United States Sanitary Commission, was appointed associate secretary, and acted in the capacity until August, 1864, when he resigned, having been actively engaged in superintending the work from Missouri to Southern Carolina during that time. In April, 1865, in connection with several medical gentleman,, he established the "New York Medical Journal", and was the managing editor for the first three volumes, when he dissolved his connection with it. This journal is now owned and carried on by the APPLETONS. Dr. DOUGLAS married, June 10, 1873, Mrs. Josephine, A. (CURTIS) STRATTON, widow of H.B. STRATTON, of Brooklyn, and daughter of Samuel and Sarah Maria (MASTEN) CURTIS, a descendant on her mother's side of the BOGARDUS family, and a direct descendant of Anneke JANS.
