Katharine was the daughter of feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Rhode Island painter Charles Walter Stetson.
After her parents divorced, Katherine moved to live with her father and his second wife Grace Ellery Channing when she was 9 years old.
Katharine studied painting in Rome, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and with William M. Chase, Sergeant Kendall, Herman D. Murphy, Birge Harrison, Cecilia Beaux, and Frank Tolles Chamberlin, who became her husband.
After settling in Pasadena, California in 1925, she remained there until her death on Feb. 18, 1979.
