Krist E. Jani was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Ernest and Jean Pesano Jani. He spent his early childhood in a home on Rossmore Avenue in the Brookline neighborhood in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Then the family moved to the Baldwin Boro suburb in the South Hills.

Krist attended St. Bonaventure University in the early 1970s, a private, Catholic, Franciscan university. The university is named after St. Bonaventure (1221–1274), a cardinal and Doctor of the Church. The campus sits on 500 acres in the town of Allegany, New York, near the city of Olean. Krist received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from St. Bonaventure University and an MBA with an emphasis on marketing from the University of Pittsburgh.

Krist married Stacy. They were later divorced.

Krist had more than 30 years of experience in marketing, sales, and domestic and international business development within the ophthalmic marketplace. Throughout his career, he was instrumental in the development of a number of lens material technologies. He started his career as an optician, but soon joined Dow Corning Ophthalmics, the world leader in medical-use silicone technology, in Sales Management and Product Marketing Management. There he progressively climbed the leadership ladder, with significant roles in the introductions of the 100% silicone Silcon and Silsight Contact Lenses.

Krist then joined, and later invested in, Paragon Vision Sciences, a high-growth leader in gas permeable polymer development, ultimately serving as vice president of Marketing and Sales. Hired as the Director of Marketing, he ultimately advanced to be the VP of Marketing & Sales. Due largely to Krist's significant hands-on involvement with key global eye-care opinion leaders and contact lens manufacturers alike while spear heading the market introductions of seven unique Oxygen Permeable Ophthalmic Polymers the company grew from an entrepreneurial venture to a global leader. Notably, Krist successfully directed the marketplace introduction of several technology firsts including the first extended wear GP polymer, the first Flouro-silicone polymer system, and the first GP segmented bifocal. These unique technologies all required the creation of new industry vernacular and jargon. The highlight of which occurred during a U.S. Senate hearing regarding NASA's Commercialization of Space Program wherein he was requested to provide expert testimony on the definitions and relationships, about and between these technologies.

During his recent role as Director, Key Market Sales and Public Relations at CooperVision, Inc., Krist led the resurrection of the Authorized Distributor Program, Key Practitioner Accounts Program and Military/Government Accounts Sales Programs, therein strongly contributed to Coopervision's growth from $75 M to nearly $350 M in U.S. sales during his tenure.

His most recent role was as part of the management team of Optical Polymer Research, Inc.

Krist was awarded the Contact Lens Manufacturers Association, Industry Enhancement Award (2001) and a Vereingung Deutscher Contactunsenspezialisten Professional Achievement Award (1997). Additionally, he sat on several ophthalmic industry Boards of Directors.

Longtime friend and colleague Bill Shelly, now strategic business manager of Bausch + Lomb Specialty Vision Products, said, "Krist Jani had a deep passion and respect for the contact lens industry. He spent virtually his entire career in the industry and became a valued leader. He had the respect of his peers, trade organizations, and practitioners due to his vast industry knowledge. His sense of humor, infectious, bellowing laugh, and sense of loyalty will be sorely missed by his many friends."

Krist Jani, 64, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died after his motorcycle left Arkansas Highway 14 and overturned Friday afternoon in Searcy County at about 2:20 p.m. The driving conditions were cloudy and wet at the time. He was taken to a Little Rock hospital where he died.

A memorial service was held at St. Bonaventure's in the spring of 2017 by Franciscan Fr. Dan Riley.

Krist's cremains were with his brother, Dr. Joseph Jani.
Now that Dr. Joe Jani has passed away, they are either in his brother's casket, or with his brother's wife.
