Lloyd Donald Barger, age 92 of Golconda, IL, passed away on December 2, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 31, 1928 in Pope County to Loren S. and Roena (Williams) Barger. Don married the love of his life, Bonnie Reva Hicks, on April 3, 1951, and they spent most of their 70 years together in Golconda, raising their family.

Don was a veteran of the Korean War and was proud to have served his country. He was a member of VFW Post 9227. He enjoyed and appreciated the natural beauty of Pope County from motorcycle riding and hiking on the trails, to fishing in the creeks and Ohio River. After retirement, Don was an active volunteer for several organizations, including driving for the Pope County ambulance and working as a disaster relief cook for hurricane victims with the American Red Cross. He was also a willing and hardworking member of the Golconda Rotary Club. Whether he was listening or playing, Don greatly enjoyed music, especially bluegrass and country. For many years, he enjoyed his daily card games with his buddies at the Golconda Golden Circle Senior Center. But the highlight of Don’s retirement was being able to travel with Bonnie through all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and nine European countries. Don was a kind and gentle man who lovingly instilled moral and ethical values to his family. They will miss his smile and compassionate eyes.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; son, Rick and Marla Barger; daughters, Susanna Duncan, Gail Barger; two brothers, Arnold and Aletha Barger, Larry and Denita Barger; 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 8 great great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Deana Smith; and infant grandson Phillip Noel Duncan; brother Gene Barger; sisters Mildred Barger McCormick, Maxine Lunsford, Kathleen Whiteside, Katherine Hurford.

Graveside service will be private at Old Grand Pier Cemetery.
