The Carroll County Sheriff's Office on Saturday was mourning the loss of one of its own.

A veteran deputy died Friday night when his patrol car left the road and plunged into a creek off Carrollton-Tyus Road.

Davy Wayne Crawford, 54, had served with the Sheriff's Office the past 11 years.

"I'm saddened to say that the Carroll County Sheriff's Office has lost an officer in the line of duty," said Sheriff Terry Langley Friday night.

"He was a public servant. He enjoyed serving the public. It's just a tremendous loss for us. All of us here at the sheriff's department are taking it personally."

Crawford was responding to a call when the Sheriff's Office lost contact with him. At about 6:45 p.m., his car was found overturned and partially submerged in a creek by officers who had been searching the area for him.

Crawford was pulled from his car by the officers and taken to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Crawford, who was a Bowdon resident, had been with the Sheriff's Office since 1999, and had previously worked with the department from 1981-1983. He had served with the Coweta County Sheriff's Office between his two stints with Carroll County.

Road conditions had been deteriorating during Friday's snowfall. The sheriff said the state patrol is investigating, but "our suspicion is road conditions" were a factor in the accident.

Langley said motorists shouldn't be on the road if they don't have to during bad weather, "but that was Deputy Crawford's job. He had to be out there."

There were no witnesses to the accident, Langley said.

Crawford was a Carroll County native.

"His family is well known and respected in this county," Langley said.

He said he had spoken with Crawford's wife, "and she's devastated. Everyone here at the department is devastated."
