Davy Wayne Crawford, a veteran deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff's Department, died accidently on February 12, 2010, when his patrol car left the road and plunged into the Little Tallapoosa River on the Carrollton-Tyus Road.

He began his career in law enforcement in 1974 as a dispatcher with the Coweta County Sheriff's Department, and also worked as a deputy there for a number of years. He has served with the Carroll County Sheriff's Department since 1999 and had previously worked with the department from 1981-1983. In intervening years he had worked again with the Coweta County Sheriff's Department, as well as with Trintex Corporation and T & R Grocery in Newnan. He fulfilled a lifelong ambition, begun in childhood, to work in law enforcement. Dave was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and loved the community of Burwell where he grew up.

Dave was born in Carrollton, Georgia, on February 16, 1955. He was the loving, devoted, and beloved son of Rev. Stanley Luther Crawford and Bernell Brown Crawford. He was the grandson of the late Floyd and Stella Crawford and the late Lewis and Zada Brown. Dave enjoyed visiting with his parents and took great satisfaction from assisting with their care during the past several years.

In addition to his parents, Dave is survived by his wife, Candy Crawford, to whom he was married on November 26, 2006 and who he felt was his destiny.

Dave and Candy were devoted to their pets whom they loved as children, their dogs, Huey ("My Little Black Buddy") and Lucy ("My Baby Girl"). Dave is also survived by his sister, Sharon Crawford Alford, of LaGrange; and his brother, Randall Stanley Crawford, of Bowdon; brother-in-law, Ted Alford; and sister-in-law, Darlene Crawford; nephews, Terry Alford and Matthew Alford of LaGrange and Clay Crawford of Bowdon; and niece, Carla Crawford Jackson of Decatur. He is also survived by uncles, Savoy and Roger Brown; and aunts, Berniece Norton, Joyce Parrish and Kathleen Brown.

In addition to his service in law enforcement, Dave pursued his love of country music throughout his life. He enjoyed singing, playing the guitar and song writing. He had the great honor of being the opening act for country legend, Ernest Tubb, at a show in Newnan and later started the Wahoo Creek Rangers Band, with whom he performed in the 1980's.

Funeral services for Davy Wayne (Dave) Crawford will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Shiloh United Methodist Church Campground at 2 pm. Rev. Martha Dye, Sheriff Terry Langley and Chaplain Keith Jiles will officiate. His body will lie in state at the campground one hour prior to the service.

The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home today from 11 am to 2 pm and from 5 to 8 pm.

Pallbearers include Johnny Dean, Jeff Fambro, Eddie Ball, Clay Crawford, Matt Alford, Terry Alford, Bobby Mullenix, and Freddy Cox.

Honorary escort will be law enforcement, Allen Windom, Greg Pate and Chad Morris.

Interment will be in the Shiloh Cemetery with the Carroll County Sheriff's Honor Guard folding and presenting the U.S. Flag.
