Mr. Ralph John Devine, 71, Springfield, died Tuesday, August 8, 1995 at the VA Medical Center in Lexington. Born October 13, 1923 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late John H. and Leona Lester Devine. He was a retired farmer, was associated with the Washington County ASCS Office for 17 years and a former employee of the New Farmers Tobacco Warehouse. He was an army veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW Post #6951. He was a member of the Mackville Baptist Church. He married the former Katherine Shewmaker at Mackville on December 25, 1946. For the past 25 years, Devine suffered with a heart condition and he was one of the early pioneers in the United States to undergo open heart surgery. The new procedure was monitored closely and his case was published in the VA Medical Journal in Asheville, NC in 1973. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include: two sons, Ralph Eugene Devine, Mackville, Jimmie Lynn Devine, Springfield; two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Penny) Rummage of Bardstown, Mrs. Perry (Rosemary) Milby, Springfield; one sister, Mrs. Vergie Brothers of Willisburg; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dewey Devine on July 4, 1955 and the Rev. Charlie Devine on June 6, 1976. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, August 10 at the Carey & Son Funeral Home in Springfield with the Rev. Gayle Brown of Asheville, NC officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Lee Lambert, pastor of the Mackville Baptist Church and the Rev. Paul Readnour, a former pastor. Burial was in the Peter Cemetery in Mackville.
