BRIDGEWATER, Aug. 19 – Dr. Rufus D. Bowman, national leader of the Church of the Brethren, died of a heart attack at Emporia, Kansas this morning.

Dr. Bowman was travelling by train from Denver to his home in Chicago when he was stricken enroute about 6 a.m. near Emporia.

He was taken from the train at Emporia and placed in an ambulance, and died enroute to a hospital.

Dr. Bowman is survived by his wife and three children, Mack Daniel Bowman, North Manchester, Ind.; and Jane Esther and Judith Margaret, both of Chicago.

Mrs. Bowman was formerly Miss Eva Craun, of Centerville. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Craun reside in the Centerville community.

Besides -his wife and children, Dr. Bowman is survived -by two sisters, Mrs. Roy Lineweaver, Bridgewater and Mrs. J. W. Hershey, McPherson, Kansas and two brothers Martin Bowman of Washington D.C, and Dr. Warren D. Bowman, president of Bridgewater College.

Son of the late Benjamin F. and Mary Miller Bowman, of Dayton, Dr. Bowman -was educated at Bridgewater Collage -and at Yale and Northwestern Universities. For the past 15 years, he has been president of Bethany Biblical Seminary in Chicago.

Besides directing the affairs of his church and seminary, he was a director of the Brethren, Publishing House; a member of the Church's General Education Board; chairman of its Advisory Peace Commission; its representative on the Federal Council of Churches, and chairman both of its General Mission Board and General Brotherhood Board. He has served twice as moderator of the church's annual conference.

No funeral arrangements were made last night, but his body will be brought to Bridgewater for the service and for burial.
