A mainstay of the math department at Wadsworth High School, Mr. Havens taught various math classes, as well as the new programming class in the late 1970s. We learned the BASIC language on an Olivetti P6060 computer that had a 32 character alphanumeric display, an 8" floppy drive, and a thermal printer. That experience gave us an advantage over a lot of fellow students in college who hadn't yet touched a computer, and we were very grateful to him. He also, remarkably and astoundingly, made algebra fun!

WADSWORTH -- Gary M. Havens, 47, of Wadsworth, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at Rittman Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, after a lengthy illness. Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Hilliard-Cox-Mullaney Funeral Home in Wadsworth, with the Rev. Timothy J. Steiner officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call tonight (Thursday) from 6-9 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to The Scholarship Foundation of Wadsworth. He was born in Wadsworth to Rolland and Ola (Rehm) Havens, and had made his home there all of his life.
