CHINA GROVE - Paul Douglas Akers, 70, of China Grove, formerly of Oakvale, W.Va., died Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at his residence.

Born in Oakvale, W.Va., Feb. 12, 1941 he was the son of the late Arvin A. and Millie Merthillia Thomas Akers.

Paul was a retired grocer and former owner of Enochville Food Center in Rowan County. He lived in North Carolina for more than 30 years and leaves behind many friends who brought great joy to his life.

He served his country in the United States Navy from 1959-1963 and was a member of DAV Chapter#27 in Concord and Richard's Coffee Shop in Mooresville. He was a 1959 graduate of Oakvale (W.Va.) High School.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles H. Akers and Jerry A. Akers.

Survivors include one son, Barry Dwayne Akers and one daughter, Cheryl Denise Ansell both of Portsmouth, Va.; one sister, Brenda Aker and her husband John of Radford, Va.; and one brother, Raymond Akers of China Grove.

Funeral Service: 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2011 at the G.E. Davis Chapel of Fredeking Funeral Home in Oakvale, W. Va. with Pastor Olen Robertson and Pastor Ginger Neely officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, in the Oakvale Cemetery with the Mercer County Veterans Council and the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.

Visitation: Friends may call at Fredeking Funeral Home in Oakvale from 5 p.m. to the service hour on Monday and are asked to be at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday if attending graveside services.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 1120 G. Street, Washington, DC 2005 or http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/
