Richard was born on 13 October 1870 at Flowerbank, Singleton, to parents Richard James Fawcett and Susannah Maria Williams.[1] He was the eldest child of 7 children born to Richard and Susannah.

His father worked as a school teacher, and they lived in areas such as Singleton, Wollombi, and Wagga Wagga.[2]

Richard married Florence Clara Shoemark on 22 May 1897 at Wagga Wagga.[3] They settled at Humula and had four children - Ivy Myrtle, Cyril Richard, Lilian Susannah, and Daphne Florence. Richard worked as a farmer and grazier, and he and Florence immersed themselves in community life.

Richard was a prolific sportsman and held positions of leadership and/or membership at the following sporting organisations: Humula Rugby Club, Humula Football Club, Humula Cricket Club, Coreinbob Cricket Club, and Southern Border Rugby Union.[4]

He was also involved in service and volunteering and was a member of the Humula Local Fire Relief Committee, Humula Bush Fire Brigade, and the Humula Progress Committee.[5]

In 1905, bushfires devastated much of the community. As the honorary secretary of the Humula Local Fire Relief Committee, Richard assisted residents with distributing funds and resources. He was a member for several years. In 1907, his farm was devastated by fire whilst he was away. Many members of the Humula community were able to extinguish it, and Richard thanked them publicly in the Wagga Wagga Express newspaper.[6]

By 1930, Richard and Clara had moved to Allonby, Forrest Hill, NSW. Richard worked as a farming labourer for the property owner Anthony Brunskill. They lived there until at least 1937.[7]

In 1932, a tragic accident occurred on the Murrumbidgee River, Borambola. Richard was present when his son-in-law Keith Tuchin drowned whilst trying to save his son Dudley and Elsie Fawcett. Their boat overturned, and Keith, who was a poor swimmer, got the children back to the boat but then drowned. Richard managed to get the boat and children to shore.[8]

Richard received a Certificate of Merit from the Royal Ship Wreck Relief and Humane Society for his efforts in trying to save Keith and for saving Dudley and Elsie. It was noted at the ceremony that this was the third time in the past 15 years that Richard had 'saved life'.[9]

Richard died from Coronary Thrombosis on 18 September 1939 at his home - Brucedale, via Wagga Wagga. The occupation on his death certificate was 'Woolclasser'. The informant was his brother Lindsay. He was buried two days later at the Wagga Wagga Monumental Cemetery.[10]
