Mena's First Mayor Gone To His Reward.
T.M. Carder Passed Away Saturday Morning After Brief Illness--For Years Prominent in Polk County Affairs.

Thad Carder, after a brief illness, passed to his last reward at 2:15 a.m, Saturday, the end resulting from a stroke of apoplexy at the age of 78 years. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at his home, 1215 Janssen Avenue after which the remains were borne to White Oak Cemetery and tenderly laid to rest by his brothers of the Masonic Lodge, of which he had long been a member.

Thaddeus Mack Carder was born in Virginia, June 7, 1832. As manhood approached he moved to Tennessee, where on June 6, 1856, he was married to Miss Matilda C. Kinser, who survives him. Of this marriage thirteen children were born, six of whom are living and attended the funeral, most being at the bedside at death. They are as follows: Samuel, Muse, OK.: John, Honey Grove, Tex.; Minnie, wife of H. White, Antlers, Ok.; Amanda, wife of J.N. Pierce of Arkinda, Ark.; Josephine, wife of J.W. Cunningham of Mena; Oscar, the youngest son, at home. The deceased raised the first company out of Bradley, Tennessee, in the early days of the Civil War, being elected it's captain. He served through the war part of the time under General John Morgan, being advanced to the rank of Major.

He came to Polk County in 1874, settling at Dallas. While there he was twice elected County Judge and once to the State Legislature, giving a good account of his stewardship. He moved to Mena when the town was established and was it's First Mayor, since which time he has lived a quiet, retired life, honored by all who knew him. Many relatives and friends are left to regret his going, save in the thought that his life's work was well done and that he was going to a deserved rest beyond.
