David Velasquez was a much-loved friend, brother and uncle.

Born to Ruben and Esther Velasquez, David grew up in the South Bay area of L.A. County, attending Selaco High School (for the deaf) in Downey. As a teen and young adult, he regularly attended Calvary Community Deaf Church in Norwalk.

A most talented man, David was well known in the Southern California deaf community. He attended Long Beach City College (earning an Associates Degree in Child Development), and later attended California State University Long Beach. He worked as a camp counselor for Lions Wilderness Camp for Deaf Children and volunteered at the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness and Orange County Deaf Equal Access Foundation.

David was a founding member of Signs Of Change, a deaf ministry of Chapel of Change in Paramount, California. He was our deaf worship leader and served as a member of our ministerial core team. He was known for his ministry in song using American Sign Language.

His last Facebook post was on September 10, 2020, from John 14:1-4: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

David passed away from complications of Coronavirus on September 23, 2020. His gentle soul is now in the presence of God Almighty.
