Ardella was the youngest of 5 children by Bert and Vera Wilson. She married Franklin Pottle in 1950 and gave birth to a daughter, Lani, in 1957. In 1961, the family moved to Maryland. Ardella and Franklin separated in 1976, then divorced in 1981. Despite several relationships, Ardella never remarried. She developed Guillian Barre Syndrome in 1985 and passed away from cancer in 1991. She requested her body be donated to the University of MD school of anatomy for research.
