William "Norman" Welch Sr., 78, of Veneta, formerly of Astoria, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, of age related causes, in Veneta.

He was born March 4, 1929, in Astoria, to William and Irene (Smethurst) Welch.

He received a master's degree in education from Linfield College.

He served in the U.S. National Guard.

On March 10, 1956, he married Carol Fahlstrom in Astoria. She survives.

Mr. Welch was a high school principal and educator for 33 years. He also worked as a health insurance agent.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, William Norman Welch Jr. of Veneta and David Welch of Otis; a daughter, Teresa Welch of Eugene; two sisters, Nancy Welch of Spokane, Wash., and Jeanette Welch of Seaside; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Welch.

Interment will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria.

A memorial will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Musgrove Family Center in Eugene.
