Sarah was a lovely lady. She was my mom's second cousin. They were friends as kids and then lost track of one another until later in life. Another cousin in our family was doing the family genealogy when he found us. He gave us a copy of the family information he had, my mom seeing Sarah's name and only a town away, my mom gave Sarah a call. That call renewed their friendship.

They got together to fill in some holes that existed in the family trees and found out that their great grandparents were buried nearby without a stone. Both being on fixed incomes they had wanted to get a stone for them, but put it off and sadly now they are both gone.

Sarah was a quiet person that never wanted to be a bother, she was never a bother, well, not until she passed away. The lesson to be learned from Sarah's life is to have a will. Let someone know your wishes and make sure they know about it. There is a possiblity I will be the one to deal with Sarah's estate, at this posting I'm still hoping a closer relative will be found. I want to do the right thing for her, I could have just walked away and let the state bury her in a unmarked pauper grave. I couldn't let that happen when I know there are so many family members buried in our family cemetery that she could rest with. My hopes are if a family member comes forward they will bury Sarah's ashes with her family. Even though she's an angel now with so many other angels. I want her remains to rest with family. She was a dear lady and deserves that.

Sarah was in the last stages of kidney cancer when she checked herself into the hospital on June 15, 2007. According to the social workers she was in good spirits the first week or so, then taking a turn for the worse she passed away 2 weeks after being in the hospital. She had told the social worker and signed papers to the affect that my mom (who had passed away 7 years before) or I would be the one to contact for any life decisions to be made if Sarah was not capable any longer. Well that time came and no one contacted me. Sarah passed away on June 24, 2007. Sadly the hospital had tried to contact me but it was a month later on July 30 when I got the letter. Sarah had been in the hospital morgue all that time, alone and unclaimed.

When I found out Sarah had passed I really didn't know what her wishes were, we hadn't talked much since my mom had died and I was really shocked to see that she thought enough of me and my mom to take care of things in the event she couldn't, only it was too late to find out what her wishes were. I contacted her landlord and we looked for a will or something that would indicate her wishes with no luck. I went back to the state and the hospital asking for advice and was told I could wash my hands of her affairs and just let the state bury her in an unmarked grave. I wasn't happy with that, she came from a large family and there were so many places she could rest without being alone again in death as she was in the morgue. Because of her length of stay in the hospital morgue Sarah had to be cremated, as of this writing I am still looking for a closer relative as per the court's laws to take over her affairs. If no one comes forward my plan is to bury her ashes with family. She deserves that much. The cemetery the state had plans on putting her in is in a flood zone and she would be buried with strangers. As long as there are family graves available I can't see that happening.

Please anyone reading this memorial. Get a will, even the simplest of lives needs a will to direct loved ones as to your wishes. Don't assume anything or think the state will do it. Because if there is anyone out there that loves you, they are not going to be happy with just letting you be dumped anywhere. They want to do the right thing, but you have to help them and let them know your wishes.

On November 20th, 2007 almost 5 months after Sarah passed, her ashes were laid to rest in a grave she now shares with her great grandparents. John and Nanny Waters Preston. She's at rest now and with family, 2 days before Thanksgiving. May she live on forever in the house of the Lord. Present at burial Funeral Director James Killian and her cousin Sharon. Prayers were said and flowers placed in her honor. May no one disturb her rest in her final resting place.

******** update 4-25-08*** Sarah is at rest with her Great grandparents. Her stone has arrived but is not yet placed and there are relatives. So she will be remembered by family. I'm so glad Sarah I'm meeting the entire Burton family.
