Barbara Atkinson, 89, of Port Byron, IL, died Friday September 9, 2016 at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis, where she had been a resident. Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 15th at Gibson – Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron. Visitation will be from 5 – 7PM on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Port Byron. Memorials may be made to Churches United Food Pantry, QCPAWS, or a charity of donor's choice.

Barbara was born on January 21, 1927 in Clinton, IA, the daughter of Ferdinand J. and Kathryn G. (Houghton) Rohwer. She graduated from Clinton High School. After high school she received her registered nurses license after training at Jane Lamb Memorial Hospital. Barbara was able to attend the 3 year school through The Cadet Core Program requiring her to work as long as WWll was transpiring. She continued to work at Jane Lamb Hospital as floor supervisor. She married Robert L. Atkinson on December 20, 1953. She later worked as RN for Dr. G. Govindaiah MD, mainly in the Port Byron office, until she retired.

Barbara was a member of the Port Byron Congregational Church and their Mary Martha Ladies Group, the Port Byron American Legion Woman's Auxiliary, was a Girl Scout Leader, and a longtime member of the 500 card club in Clinton, Iowa. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, Bible Study, and helping her children with homework.

She is survived by her children, Robyn Johnson (partner Amber McNamara), Banner Elk, NC, Kate (Jack) Spiegel, Moline; sister, Kathryn Smith, Albany, IL; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Drew) Cannon, Maryland, Sarah (Michael) Sutherland, Florida, Caleb Spiegel, Sioux City, IA, Luke Spiegel, Moline and 4 great grandchildren.
