Born in Dongan Hills, she remained in that community her entire life. She retired after working more than 20 years as an aide in the New York City school system. Most of her career was spent at Tottenville High School. She attended McKee High School. Mrs. Abato was a champion paddle ball player. She also was an avid bowler, ping-pong player and marathon participant, and played softball in her youth. She was a parishioner of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills. Mrs. Abato is survived by her daughter, Dena Scarso. "Family was the No. 1 priority in her life," said her daughter, Dena. "She was very close with her many nieces and nephews."
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
