William Knowles Craig
HARWICH PORT - William K. Craig, Sr., of Harwich Port, died at home on October 17, 2019. He was 81 years old. Bill was born June 12, 1938 to Edgar A. Craig and Olive K. Craig of North Easton, Ma, and attended school in North Easton, and Dean College in Franklin, Ma. Other than the one year he served in the U.S. Army, Bill spent every summer of his life in Harwich Port. An outstanding athlete, Bill was a part of the 1955 – 1956 undefeated football teams, and the 1954 – 1956 undefeated varsity basketball teams at Oliver Ames High School. As a shortstop he batted .468 and was invited to the Detroit Tigers rookie camp. He played on the Harwich amateur basketball team, and for nine years during the 1950′s and 1960′s on the Harwich Athletic Association baseball team of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He continued to be active with the HAA, and as its president oversaw the construction of Whitehouse Field. He umpired high school baseball for 12 years.
Bill worked in the retail lumber business his entire career, beginning in his teens unloading freight cars, and rising to be president of the three corporations of The Nye Companies. He purchased the branch in Provincetown , Massachusetts in 1975, establishing Craig Lumber, and then commuted six days a week between Harwich Port and Provincetown while raising his three children himself. He was active in the Northeast Retail Lumbermen’s Association, the Rotary Club and several Harwich town committees.
Bill loved the sea, and for 57 years had a series of boats on his mooring in Wychmere Harbor. He cruised the northeast coast between Bar Harbor and Long Island Sound, and made one memorable trip between Cape Cod and the Abacos of the Bahamas. When he sold Craig Lumber in 1985, he bought a sloop that he registered in St. Thomas USVI, and for ten winters introduced friends and family to the Virgin Islands. He was a member of Allen Harbor Yacht Club, serving as Commodore in 1989 – 1990.
In addition to his second wife, Mrs. Bethany Holley Craig, he is survived by his children, William (Bill) K. Craig Jr. and his wife Marie, Wendy E. Flynn, and Walter B. Craig and his wife Diane, and also by his sister Hazel Gander, and his grandchildren Bill Flynn, Ryan Flynn, Sean Craig, and Grace Craig, as well as a niece and several nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Evelyn Craig, his brother Ed Craig and wife Jean, and by his first wife Judith Ann (Kempainen) Craig died unexpectedly on Oct. 17, 2008. He was a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwich Port.
