Anchorage resident William Joseph Aberle, 60, died of heart failure on Sept. 12, 2006, at home. A service with visitation was held at Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel. The Rev. Don Ashley officiated.
Mr. Aberle was born July 31, 1946, in Big Bear, Calif., and moved to Alaska in 1965. He finished high school at West High. He enlisted in the Navy in 1966 and was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. He was on board when a plane crashed on deck, causing a fire aboard the ship, killing 38 pilots. Mr. Aberle received several Commendation Medals for shoving 500-pound bombs overboard before the fire exploded them. He also got his picture and story on the front page of the Daily News. After the Navy, he came back to Anchorage and attended college at the University of Alaska in Anchorage and Fairbanks. He worked several jobs for Telons Night Clubs and the National Weather Service. He moved to Hawaii and received his degree in foreign trade, then came back to Alaska to work for the Department of Commerce and the University of Alaska. He retired from the state in 1997 and worked as a part-time consultant until his death.
Mr. Aberle is survived by his mother, Virginia Aberle; sister, Darilynn Aberle; brother and his wife, Ed and Marianne Aberle; niece and her husband, Christine and Danny Stelly; and nephew, Danny, and his two sons, Alerick and Garin. He is preceded in death by his younger brother, David Aberle, and father, Dan Aberle.
