Hunley "Tommy" Thomas was born on May 3, 1906 (along with his twin brother Hubert) in Hotchkiss, Colorado. He was enrolled in the Staunton Military Acedemy in Staunton, VA around 1919. After leaving Staunton, he graduated from high school in Paonia, Colorado in 1922 and went on to earn a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado in 1927. In the 1930s, Tommy worked for RCA. Tommy enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1940, and after completing Officer Training was commissioned as an officer and served in WW II. After the war, Tommy married Marjorie Kibbe in 1946. Tommy became a career Naval officer and also served during the Korean War and retired as a Captain from the Navy in the early 1960s.

Following his naval career, Tommy and Marjorie lived in Ojai, California. Tommy and Marjorie enjoyed sports car rallying for a time. Tommy was an electrical engineer and very adept with electronics. He also designed and built "rally computers" for sports car ralliers. In the early 1970s Tommy and Margie moved to Lake Elsinore/Wildomar, California where they lived for many years. Tommy was also an amateur radio operator (Amateur Extra class, call sign W6CAB). In retirement he designed, built and operated assorted ham radios and designed and constructed several automatic "keyers" and keyboards for sending Morse code on the ham radio bands.

Tommy died in 1998 shortly after Margie passed away at Wildomar, California.
