Jena newspapers are missing from around the date of his death, but a paragraph appeared in surviving newspapers just a few days before his death:

Uncle Tom Allein [sic], an old Confederate war horse from Ward 5, was here last Saturday and expressed the desire to enter the army to assist his two sons [This would be Allie and Dewitt] and the other LaSalle boys in licking the Huns.
