Bill was a proud patriot serving over 20 years in the United States Navy and retired to spend his retirement years with his family. He volunteered with the Piedmont Baptist Association, giving enormous hours with the church building. His daughters, Jennifer and Laura, were specifically instructed to know the 23 Psalm during life trials. His guidance for his children was teaching them the meaning of love. He told them it is important not to go to bed angry. His work ethic was a strong element of his life as learned from his military training.

After retirement he used construction skills by building decks during the Summer. His daughter told this story at his memorial service. She was helping her father put the owner's deck furniture on the recently completed deck and she was moving a glass-top table. The table glass went crashing into a million pieces. She was horrified as to what her father would say. He paused and didn't get angry, just said such "things happen." Bill called the owner. The owner was more concerned for their physical well-being. The owner was told were no injuries. The owner said breakage was fine and not to don't worry. Bill told his daughter, he was in charge of the construction and it was important for him to take the blame as he was the supervisor. This was explicit example of who Bill was and his concern for others, as well as his military upbringing.

Bill was a servant of God, soft spoken, and had in the past attended many churches to include Episcopal, Lutheran, Catholic, Methodist, and finally Baptist. He had accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and would continue his life loving the Lord. He lived a life of faith. During his final days he knew he would be with the Lord and knew he would see others soon. His wife, Trish, daughters Jennifer (Dennis) Garrigan and Laura (Ray) Goodman, grandchildren, Logan Madison & Grayson Richard, as well as many friends and family attended his memorial service held on Saturday, July 10th, 2020 at his church Clifford Baptist Church, Clifford, Amherst County, Virginia. Bills wife, Trish and daughter, Jennifer, spoke loving words about Bill. The pastor, Dr. Michael R. Fitzgerald, at a family request, played several songs on his guitar for the family. The service ended and prepared lunch plates were provided to all in the parish hall.

Volunteers Join to Help Remodel Amherst Church Facility
(Newsadvance.com, Oct 14, 2015)
By Reggie Wilburn
About 30 years ago, the Piedmont Baptist Association purchased the old Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church building located at 440 Rose Mill Road in Amherst.
The PBA is made up of 23 churches in Amherst and Nelson counties. The purpose of the acquisition was to have a central location for an office, a place to gather for meetings and to expand joint missions.
Over time, the old sanctuary became a collection point for much discarded materials from all of the churches in the association. As a result, it became full of out-of-date materials. About six years ago Rev. Dwayne Martin, pastor of Ebenezer and Fairmont churches, with the help of others, began to clear the area and haul off outdated items.
Three years ago the moderator for the association was Pastor Mickey Ryan Jr. Under his leadership, the slow process began to completely remodel the old sanctuary for reuse, resulting in replacing windows and doors and remaining items. The old pews were reworked to make them more practical and sold to support the project.
In the process of tracking down wiring to update the electrical system, an old box with six of the original kerosene lamps was found in the attic. In the old United Methodist Church they were placed in a cast iron sconce that had been secured to the old window facing in the original sanctuary to give light to worshippers at the time. These old lamps will be put back in service to enhance the beauty and charm of yesteryear.
The project had come to a standstill until about a year ago when Bill Berghorn volunteered to help. After retiring from the Navy, Bill and his wife moved to Nelson County and became members of Clifford Baptist. Under his leadership, the remodeling project took on new life and progress and was once again on track. Bill has invested hundreds of hours in the old sanctuary and his shop at home to make this effort a success.
The next big hurdle was electrical. Over time, much of the wiring had been done by well-meaning folks with little or no knowledge of the codes, if any, that existed at the time. At this critical stage of the project Luther Beverly stepped in. Luther is a member of Bolling Hill Baptist on Coolwell Road in Madison Heights and is a licensed electrician.
He gave many hours of his time and skill by rewiring the facility and bringing it up to code. He would not let anything get by that did not meet code.
It soon became evident that a ladies’ touch was needed to put the décor in place. Betty Fortune of Clifford Baptist and Barbara Myers of Jonesboro Baptist came on board to assist and advise the color scheme and window coverings. In addition, Trish Berghorn and Bonnie Davis provided hours of work and advice on what and how to accomplish the desired results.
The association celebrated a dedication of the renovated facility last Sunday.
