Revolutionary Figure. The family of Josefa Espejo Sánchez, characterized in the region by belonging to the group of Porfirian landowners, with a booming economy and with political power. Josefa learned to read and write in her own home. She was the wife of General Emiliano Zapata. Josefa had two children from her marriage to Emiliano. Upon Zapata's death, Josefa was known as "La Generala," for being the General's widow. He suffered persecution by the governments of the coup general Victoriano Huerta and Venustiano Carranza. Josefa directed the construction of the "Tierra y Libertad" secondary school in Villa de Ayala, in 1930 she belonged to the Revolutionary Women's Block, the United Front for Women's Rights, and the Confederation of Precursors and Veterans of the Liberation Army of the South.
