Sylvia Kiel died peacefully at Silver Oaks Health Campus on June 6, 2020 at the age of 81.

Sylvia was born on September 25, 1938 in Columbus, Indiana, born to Paul W and Francis R Armstrong Smith. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1956 and attended Purdue University. She married her high school sweetheart, Fritz T Kiel, in 1959 and together they had 4 children. Sylvia was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority in college. She became a full-time homemaker, mother and public servant.

Sylvia was a co-founder of Mudlarks, a Garden Club of Indiana, Inc. in 1969. She was instrumental in civic projects including maintaining the gardens at the Bartholomew County Courthouse which now includes the Veterans Memorial and vast amounts of brick beds along 3rd Street in downtown Columbus.

She served as a Bartholomew County Commissioner in the 90's. She became a well- known breeder of Pekingese Dogs.

Sylvia loved her family, friends, and community. She attended the First United Methodist Church of Columbus where she enjoyed singing in the church choir. Her love for people and service led her to become very involved in the Stephen Ministry. She found comfort in helping others; she grew spiritually as she ministered people who were hurting or troubled. Sylvia enjoyed attending all of her children's, grandchildren's, and community sporting events, performances, and events. She loved life and had a vivacious enthusiasm for all she endeavored and everything in her life. Sylvia enjoyed travelling abroad with her husband and her friends. Her laugh was contagious.

Sylvia is survived by her children, Kip (Aleta) Kiel, Pat (Becky) Kiel, and Jenny (Scott) Hollinger; grandchildren, Brittany (Peter) Davis, Taylor (Gurpartap) Gill, Brandon (Anja) Kiel, Craig, Drew, Dusty and Gunner Kiel and Madison, Morgan, and Mia Hollinger and Jessica and Brittany DeHart, and 8 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jacque (Bill) Chambers and sister-in-law, Shari Kohne. Sylvia is preceded in death by her husband, Fritz; her son, Blair and her parents, Paul W and Francis R Armstrong Smith.

Out of respect and concern for our friends' and family's health, we are mindful of the current COVID-19 virus status. Private services are planned at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home with Dennis W. Aud officiating.

[ETA: A celebration of life will be held Sept. 25, 2020, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street.]

Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour.

Memorial Contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
