Homer F. McCreight, 87, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., formerly of Peoria, Ill., passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center after a brief illness.

Homer was born in Galesburg, Ill., on March 1, 1923, to Frank and Bessie McCreight.

He moved to Peoria during the Depression and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. They stationed him near Chicago for six months, and when his time was up, he returned to Peoria to marry the love of his life, Dortha Parks, in September of 1940. They were married 49 years before Dortha passed away in February of 1990.

Dortha was blind, and they were very involved with the Peoria Area Blind Center.

Homer retired from Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, Ill., in 1980 after 32 years of service, and was a proud member of the Local 974 Union.

Until earlier this year, he lived at Riverview Independent Senior Living in East Peoria, Ill. In August, he moved to Florida to enjoy being back near the Gulf and to be close to family.

Homer vacationed for many years in Sarasota, Fla., with Dortha, so returning to Florida this year was a very enjoyable experience.

Homer loved to play drums as a hobby, and he was very happy performing his music during social hour at Riverview in East Peoria, and also at Westwood Retirement Resort, where he lived for a short time.

Homer is survived by one daughter, Joanne (James) Martin of Clever, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two siblings, Leo and Maryetta; his wife, Dortha (Parks); and his second wife, Lois (Bayless); who passed away in 2002.
