Karon M. Hoffman (formerly Krueger) age 69, of McHenry, Illinois and formerly of the Algonquin/Dundee area, died peacefully and free on May 18, 2020, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Illinois. She was born July 10, 1950, to Clarence and Marion Kerr. She leaves behind her loving husband and partner of nearly thirty years, Florencio “Dave” Rael; her children, Jenny Winkler, Jessica Allen and Karl (Amanda) Hoffman; eight grandchildren, Jared, Bailey, Madison, Donovan, Violet, Dominic, Harold, and Marilyn; siblings, Ed (Debbie) Kerr and Fran Kerr; stepchildren, David and Gloria; grandchildren, Zac (Jenny) and Comfort (Rob); great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, aunts and uncles.
Karon always followed her own path in life and worked hard to overcome obstacles she faced. From early on she became the first, or one of the first, females hired at many jobs throughout her life. She was at the top of her class at the Chicago Police Academy and worked for Sleepy Hollow Police Department and as a 911 dispatcher. She wanted to be a part of the action and enrolled in one of the state’s first Paramedic programs. She joined the Rutland Dundee Fire Department, also became a CPR instructor and found joy in teaching people.
She always loved animals since early on and farmed for several years. She would later meet her true love Dave, and became active with Algonquin Founder’s Days and the Lioness Club. She obtained her real estate license, worked for Century 21 in Algonquin/Carpentersville for several years and as an appraiser until the market changed.
Seeking a career change, she overcame stigmas to return to school later in life. She was driven and found meaning in learning. She became a full time student and a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. At age 65, she received an Associate Degree from Elgin Community College and graduated with High Honors. She took the state nursing exam just because she could. She felt accomplished when she passed, then focused on caring for her husband. Last fall, they made the decision for her to re-enter the work force to afford medication when in the Medicare gap. In late January 2020, she was excited to start a nursing job at Alden Terrace of McHenry. Tragically, she became sick with Covid-19 and was hospitalized.
To some, she may be remembered as a Healthcare Hero who sacrificed to help others. To those who knew and loved her, she was so much more. She followed her dreams and achieved a meaningful life helping others. Her story ended abruptly but it was after she accomplished these.

A visitation for Karon will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 from 9:30 AM with a Service at 12 Noon at Willow Funeral Home 1415 W. Algonquin Rd., (one mile east of Randall Rd.) Algonquin/Lake in the Hills. Final resting place will be at Dundee Township Cemetery - East. privately with the family. However, those who would like to be present in their cars to show respect may join the procession to the cemetery. A celebration of life will be held another day.
