John was the son of John and Wilhelmina "Minnie" Balbach. His parents were immigrants. His father was a blacksmith.

In the 1890 San Jose City Directory, his "Pioneer Shop" was located on the corner of Market and Pierce. He was residing at Pierce Avenue. Several family members were living at 532 South Market Street. Today there is a Balbach Street, off of South Market, within walking distance to 532 South Market.

John married Nellie Kenyon, 3 July 1889, Campbell, Santa Clara, California, USA. Nellie was the daughter of Harlow and Catherine Kenyon. They had a daughter, Helen, who married Mr. Daniel Sullivan.

Unfortunately, John died at the age of 38 with a cancerous infection.
