Lady Evelyn Emily Mary Petty-Fitzmaurice was the elder daughter of the statesman Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, and his wife, Lady Maud Hamilton, daughter of the 1st Duke of Abercorn. She was married on July 30, 1892 to Victor Cavendish, the nephew and heir of the 8th Duke of Devonshire, becoming Duchess of Devonshire in 1908.

The Duke and Duchess had seven children, 2 sons and 5 daughters: Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895-1950); Lady Maud Louisa Emma Cavendish (1896-1975); Lady Blanche Katherine Cavendish (1898-1987); Lady Dorothy Evelyn Cavendish (1900-1966); Lady Rachel Cavendish (1902-1977); Lord Charles Arthur Francis Cavendish (1905-1944); Lady Anne Cavendish (1909-1981).
