Statesman. 33rd President of the Republic of Costa Rica. He served from May 8, 1958 to May 8, 1962. A lawyer, he first served as an ambassador to the United States, the United Nations and the Organization of American States. Subsequently, in 1950. he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship. In 1953 he became a member of the Legislative Assembly. As president, he is best remembered for several notable accomplishments including the establishment of the Ministry of Industries and creation of the Institute of Agrarian Development to help low-income farmers become land owners and develop the land into small productive farms. He improved the supply of drinking water and had built sewers in cities and towns. He initiated construction of the Central Bank. He broke diplomatic relations with the communist government of Fidel Castro in Cuba. He was declared as “Benemérito de la Patria” (Most Worthy Citizen of the Fatherland) on June 6th, 2005.
