John D Knox is the son of Joseph J Knox and Harriet G Dennis. He was born in Monroe County, Tennessee and moved to Overton County, Tennessee with his parents about 1851. He married Amanda Francis Masters on August 19, 1854 in Overton County, Tennessee.

He was mustered as Private July 30, 1961 into the Tennessee 25th Confederate infantry of Capt. Josiah H. Bilbrey's Company K. He was from Livingston, Tennessee. He served until May 25, 1863 when he was documented as deserted at Fairfield.

John D and Amanda left Overton County about early 1870 for Illinois and perhaps Missouri before settling in Boone County, Arkansas by 1880. In 1883 John D homesteaded with his son Jessie Madison Knox. Both men obtained patents April 3, 1890.

In 1893 Jessie M. Knox and family left for Oklahoma. It is not known if John D. Knox went with them or stayed. Amanda was in Garvin County, OK by 1900 with her children. John D.'s death date is known from the probate record of his son, Robert Tate Knox, who died in Garvin County, OK with no will in 1906. In the court's search for heirs it was determined the father's death date was listed and mother, Amanda, was his heir.

John and Amanda entered into a mortgage on their homestead December 7, 1893 with J.N. Milum with power of sale if the debt of $500 is in default. He sues for clear title beginning in 1896 and sells the land. He also adds John's heirs to the newspaper notices of the demand.

John dies December 28, 1893. Attempts to locate this mortgage have been unsuccessful. The heirs did not pay the debt to Mr. Milum. There are no death records or burial records so John's final resting place is not known. In memoriaum John is added to the stone Amanda r. Knox in Oaklawn Cemetery.
