Lina was born on September 2, 1915 to Marietta "Maria" Louisa LanFranchi and a stone cutter named Giuseppe Berte. She was proceeded by a sister, Ketri/Chetri/Caterina, born in 1913. She would later be joined by another sister, Ancilla Francesca Ermelinda, a few years later in 1918. [1] She would also have two other sisters, Iride and Giuseppina. At the age of 11, in 1926, her father, Giuseppe, would die in Berceto. A few years later, in 1931, at the age of 15, she would visit her mother, Maria, who was now living in Casola. She would be traveling to house of Louis Franci, her uncle, who was living in Wilmerding. She was noted doing housework. [2] By 1940 she was living with a Cattani family (unsure of current relation) in Queens, New York, and was listed as single, although her birthplace is incorrectly listed as "New York", with income coming from "other sources". Ten years later, in 1950, she is living in Manhattan as a lodger and making corsets. It is also noted that she "never married". [3] She went on a three month trip to Italy in 1951, leaving from her home at 36 W. 94 St., and returns the following year, in 1952, still listed as single. [4] On Aug. 20, 1991 she sent a setter to Al and Marlene with the former trying to learn more about his family. Beyond that, little is known about her life.

In searching for her last name, I came across a 1972 marriage record for Ugo Oscar Gagliardi who is the child of Lina Valenzuela and Edgardo Gagliardi. However, further digging shows that she cannot be this person despite taking the name Gagliardi later in life. For one, Ugo is born in July 24, 1931. As such, Edgardo Gagliardi is not her husband, nor is Ugo Oscar Gagliardi, a well-known educator and systems software architect who was born in Naples in 1931.
