My Grandmother Billye was the only grandmother I knew. She never had children and was especially fond of me for that reason and because she held me immediately after birth and before either of my parents. She was very active in BPW, Business Professional Women; collected stamps; and enjoyed photography. When she met my grandfather, she was long independent. They had tough times during the depression and sometimes had only $.25/day earnings (if I remember correctly). She attempted to raise my father on her own for awhile but he ended up living with a first cousin, Winnie Harlan. It was my mother who brought her into my life and back into Dad's. She is the one who made Christmas a wonderful and magical time for me and my sister because she bought such wonderful gifts and wrapped them as if each gift was one of gold. My parents didn't have money for much of a Christmas in the early years and I credit GM Billye with making this holiday so special.
