Joyce was a veteran of the US Air Force and served with the 326th Fighter Inceptor Squadron Air Defense Command. She was also a dedicated member of Westwood Community Baptist Church where she served on the Mother's Board and was an ordained Evangelist. She served faithfully until her health failed and was always willing to help out where needed.
She was married 1st on February 5, 1963 in Las Vegas, Nevada as the 2nd wife of Willie Flem "Billy" Herbert (1930–1973). She was married 2nd about 1974 to James Fred Norris.
