Doris Jean Shaw Jones was born in Gainesville, Texas in June of 1930. She was the oldest of three girls. Her parents were Dora Graham Shaw and Hazel Baxter Shaw.

Doris attended J.M. Lindsey and Newsome Daugherty Memorial High School where she excelled in art, music and band. Doris was introduced to Pete Jones in Gainesville by friends from Tabernacle Baptist Church where they served from the time they married until moving to Saint Jo, Texas and joining First Baptist which was next door to their home.

Doris was not only an attentive mother of three, but also worked as a writer and editor for the Saint Jo Tribune for several years. Her editorials contained stories of life during the ‘60’s and were republished in other newspapers because of their rich words and deep meaning. She also served as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School superintendent, Women’s Mission Union president and soloist in the choir. She was known to bring visiting pastors home for lunch ‪after Sunday morning services. Pete and Doris moved back to Gainesville to live next-door to Doris’s parents in 1972. Pete and Doris quickly became involved in First Baptist Church of Gainesville where she served as music secretary for nine years.

Doris’ hobbies included watercolor painting, reading classic and modern literature, playing the organ, singing, listening to music, playing bridge and other card games, decorating her home and hosting family and friends. For the last 20 years of their 70 year marriage, Pete and Doris made First United Methodist Church of Gainesville their church home where they attended faithfully until they were no longer able.

Doris Jones is survived by her children: Tim Jones and wife Chie, Terry Jones and wife Becky, Traci Paulette and husband Cary. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kristen Neal; Katherine Jones and children Noah and Amelia; Meredith Ward, husband John and children Charlotte and Hayden; Alex Bellamy, husband Nick and children Cade, Stone, and Blair; Jenna Stammen and husband Tim; Madison Paulette; Garrett Paulette; and her sister, Barbara West and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sister, Peggy Cooley Ward.

Doris’ favorite book in the Bible was the Book of Corinthians. She read Traci Chapter 13 of 1st Corinthians every night before bed until it was memorized. Her favorite gift to give her graduating senior Sunday School girls was a copy of Henry Drummond’s sermon on Ist Corinthians 13 from which is quoted “You will find as you look back upon your life that the moments when you have truly lived are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love.”

Doris Jones did just that.

Doris’ family would like to thank: Wheeler Place Assisted Living, Pathways Palliative and Hospice Care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church.

A private interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville. A memorial service celebrating Doris’ life will be scheduled later this year.
