Shirley A. Schuchart was born on September 13, 1927, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the daughter of Frank Joseph and Elsie Schuessler Schuchart. They had married on March 14, 1925, in Cincinnati.

She had one older sibling, Virginia Schuchart, who was born on November 11, 1925.

Shirley grew up in Cincinnati. She married Paul Kappelhoff (later changed to Kappel). They had two sons. They moved to California, so that Paul Kappel could continue to work for his sister, Doris Day . Later, Shirley’s sister Ginny and her husband, as well as their parents also moved to California.

Paul Kappelhoff died on April 8, 1957, in Los Angeles, California, after having a stroke two months prior. After his death, Shirley went to work in the music industry and later became Doris Day's private secretary.

On July 19, 1958, Shirley A Schuchart Kappelhoff and Neil C. Stewart were married in Los Angeles, California. They had three sons.

Neil C. Stewart was an engineer and worked in the space program. They lived in the Houston, Texas, area from 1966 to 1996 when Neil C. Stewart retired. They then moved to College Station to be closer to their sons, where they enjoyed their lives for many years with many friends as well as family.

Neil C. Stewart died on February 27, 2014, at Bryan, Texas. A memorial service was held at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, College Station, Texas. He was buried at College Station Cemetery, College Station, Texas. Although this left a terrible sorrow in her heart, Shirley Stewart continued to love those around her and was equally loved by those she touched.

Shirley Stewart died at Bryan, Texas, on August 25, 2019. She was survived by a son and daughter-in-law in Charleston, South Carolina; another son and daughter-in-law of Leander, Texas; two sons of College Station, Texas; and a son and daughter-in-law of Denver, Colorado; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed and remembered as a truly loving wife, mother and friend to all.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held on October 19, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, College Station, Texas. Burial was at College Station Cemetery.
