Thomas J. Abeid, Sr., 93

Campbell…………Funeral services will be held at 9:30am Thursday at the Wasko Funeral Home and 10am in Christ the Good Shepherd Parish at St. John Catholic Church for Thomas J. Abeid, Sr., 93, who passed away at his home Saturday morning.
Mr. Abeid was born Feb. 19, 1920, in Cambridge , Oh, the son of Simon and Mary Karam Abeid. The family moved to Youngstown in 1935 and Tom attended Grant Junior High and Graduated from South High School in 1940.
Following his graduation, Tom joined the U.S. Air Force in 1941 and his enlistment was extended because of WWII. He was discharged in 1945, only to be recalled due to the Korean Conflict.
When Tom returned from the war, he established the Abeid Insurance Agency, where he has been an Insurance Broker in the Campbell area since 1947.
Mr. Abeid enjoyed boxing. He was a boxer for the U.S. Air Force and the local Golden Glove organization.
Mr. Abeid was a main staple in the City of Campbell.
Besides being a member of many civic, fraternal and community organizations, Mr. Abeid valued his membership in the Campbell Gridiron Club for over 35 years.
Tom’s contributions to the youth of Campbell totals over 50 years, his involvement was recognized in 2010, as he was inducted into the Campbell Memorial High School Hall of Fame. He was noted for his leadership of the Pony League, which he transitioned into the establishment of the Campbell Babe Ruth Baseball League in 1972.
Tom served as President of the Babe Ruth League for 30 years giving freely of his time and never expecting anything in return.
Mr. Abeid served 8 years on the Campbell Board of Education and was partly responsible for the naming and dedication of the Campbell Memorial Stadium, which is now known as “John M. Knapick Field”, honoring the legendary coach.
Most recently, Mr. Abeid was honored by the Campbell American Legion for his 60 years of dedicated service to them and the community.
He is a member of Christ the Good Shepherd Parish at St. John Catholic Church.
Mr. Abeid’s life long sweetheart and wife, the former Rose M. Graveno, whom he married on May 27, 1944, passed away on Feb. 15, 2012.
Tom leaves to cherish his memory his four children, Tom Jr. (Nancy) Abeid, Paulette (Chuck) Beshara, Gary (Cheryl) Abeid and Sharon (John) Mazias; nine grandchildren, Bryan, Brett, Chad, Justine, Jessie, Michael, Jaclyn, Maria and Anthony; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jennie Abeid.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Rose; two brothers, Mellad and Zudy Abeid; and a sister, Mae Zarella.
The Abeid family had entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends on Wednesday evening
