Son of Frederick Tiedtke and Hulda Tietz and the youngest of 11 children. Graduated from Bowdon High School in Bowdon, Wells, North Dakota. Ed was a WWII veteran of the US Navy, a member of the American Legion Post 11, a member of the United Methodist Church, and a member of the Olivedale Senior Center. He married Irma Edith Voelz July 13, 1941 in Indian Head, Maryland and they had 2 children. Ed was retired from Diamond Power in a Lancaster, Ohio, a local manufactuing plant where he was employed as a pipe fitter.
