Joy was born and raised in Dothan, Alabama. Her father and mother were John and Eula Pearl (Meeks) Henderson, and step father Chester Earl Garrison. She had two older siblings, Gladys Henderson Rice Bruno and Ray Henderson. Upon completion of high school, Joy attended the University of Alabama. During summer break from college, she drove through a red light and was stopped by Patrolman Julian Frederick Draughon (also on Find A Grave), rather than giving Joy a citation, he asked her out to dinner and the rest was history. They were married on May 2, 1947. They had two daughters, Deborah Joy born August 18, 1949 and Gloria Louise born March 9, 1951. Patrolman Daughon was killed while on patrol duty on the evening of October 3, 1953. Joy later moved to Dallas, Texas with her older sister and remained there until her death.
Joy survived diabetes, breast cancer in the 1990's and a quadruple bypass in 2000. Joy took her life on September 19, 2004.
Joy (called "Mama Joy", by many who loved her)is survived by her daughters, as well as three grandsons, S. Brice McBeth and wife Amber; Chase L. McBeth; Hayden S. King; and son-in-law Lonnie E. Barnes, all of Dallas, Texas; Nephews Donald Ray Rice and wife Dee of Birmingham, Alabama; Steve and wife Ginger Henderson of newnan, Georgia; Johnny and wife Carolyn Henderson of Albany, Georgia; Neice Nancy (Henderson) Hawkins and husband Steve of Tifton, Georgia, and her sister-in-law Jeannine Henderson of Newnan, Georgia.
