William H. Campbell was the son of Peter Campbell and Elizabeth Campbell. He was born in Wisconsin and enlisted as a Private on 6 May 1861 in Company F, 4th Cavalry Regiment Wisconsin. He was wounded on May 27, 1863 during the battle for Port Hudson, Louisiana, and died as a result of those wounds on 3 Jun 1863 at New Orleans, LA.

William had two sisters, Adelia and Emma Campbell. His father Peter had already passed away while building an addition to the Union House, a hotel and tavern in Rochester, Wisconsin. There is also a newspaper article telling how William walked all the way from Rochester to his Regiment to enlist.
