He served as a deacon and an elder at J. J. White. He was involved locally in Habitat for Humanity. He was a top pharmaceutical representative at Wyeth for many years. He was a member of Kappi Psi fraternity at Ole Miss. He played an instrumental role in the rebuilding of Rocky Point Missionary Baptist Church in 1997. He received the Service Above Self award from the McComb Rotary Club in 1997. He was selected SMCC Alumnus of the Year in 1999 and received the "Knock ‘Em Out John" Foundation's award sponsored by former teammate Jerry Clower.
He was survived by his wife of 55 years, Marie Tolar Catchings; two sons, William Richard Catchings, Jr. and wife Cyndy of Summit, MS, and Thomas D. Catchings and wife Rachel of McComb; one daughter, Lisa Catchings Terrell of McComb; one sister, Elizabeth Robinson and husband R. B. of McComb; 6 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
