Married 14 March 1872 in Falls City Nebraska to Mary Melissa Peckinpaugh. Samuel was an attorney and police judge in Santa Barbara at the time of his death in 1901. His wife Mary is buried in Santa Barbara cemetery. His odd posture in the photo was caused by being shot in the right shoulder, and the bullet came out the left shoulder while a soldier in the Civil War.
