Johnny Carlton Harper was born in College Park, Georgia, to Gilbert H. and Evie Whitlock Harper.

He graduated from College Park High School and attended North Georgia Military College in
Dahlonega, GA before serving four years in the U. S. Air Force in various locations including Morocco. He was stationed at Ellington Air Force Base near Houston, Texas when he met his future wife, Mary Martin. They were married on September 21, 1957.

After working three years at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station with General Electric, Johnny decided to go back to school and get his degree . He spent three years at the University of Houston and got a degree in Physics so he could eventually get back to what became the Kennedy Space Center. He worked for NASA there for 32 years before his retirement. He always said that it was the very best job he ever had.

Johnny and Mary have two sons: Jay Martin Harper and Kevin Scott Harper
