John married Mary "Mamie" E. Johnson (1846-1917), dau. of Col. A.W. Johnson. They had 2 children (Johnson 1872-1947 and Elizabeth 1875-Unknown)

John was educated at Center College at Danville, KY; junior partner in wholesale dry goods house of Bransford, McWhirter & Co., of Nashville, TN; special correspondent of the Nashville Union and American to the National Democratic Convention in 1865; in 1860 member of wholesale dry goods house of Bransford, Goodbar & Co., of Memphis, TN; commissioned in1861 captain of infantry by Governor Harris, and retired from that post February 22, 1862; promoted major by President Jefferson Davis for gallant service at Chattanooga in 1863; returning from war in 1865, made general agent of L & N RR at Nashville; later cashier of the Nashville National Bank and president of Nashville Street Railway system.
